However, mobile games are increasingly making use of 3D effects to control lighting, reflection, and refraction. SpriteBuilder is an open-source application allowing experienced and novice developers alike to create high-quality 2D mobile games. Now, SpriteBuilder integrates these 3D effects that can be used on its 2D assets. However, in order to make use of these effects, artists needed to create one critical asset: a normal map. Our project was to develop a native OSX application, to be used in conjunction with SpriteBuilder, that allows artists to create these normal maps specifically for 2D sprites. This tool is open source, and freely available to the public. It is specifically designed for 2D artists, using technologies and paradigms that allow them to feel comfortable in this editor. Our work includes user-oriented product design, UI design, development, implementation and maintenance of a released project.
Olin College of Enigneering is a small engineering college in Needham, MA.
SCOPE is a senior capstone program in engineering at Olin College. A company sponsors a team to work on a year long project.
Apportable is sponsoring our SCOPE team. We are working with them to build an OSX application that is an editor for normal maps. Our product is intended to work with Sprite Builder, for creating mobile games.
